Jute Coasters

Jute Coasters
These DIY coasters are not just practical — they also add a stylish addition to your decor. Jute dyed with earth tones adds a cozy, neutral touch to your tabletops!

Let's Get Started

STEP 1:

A)    Add about 1–2 tablespoons of paint in a disposable cup. Repeat with the second color in another cup. Tip: Mix colors of paint to create your own look! We used brown mixed with white for one color, and mixed the brown, light beige, and white for the second color.

B)    Add approximately ½ cup of water to each cup.

C)   Mix the paint and water together.

D)   You now have two paint dyes ready to use!

STEP 2:

A)    Place a length of jute into each cup. Let the paint dye soak into the jute.

B)    Remove the jute from the paint dye and lay it on scrap paper to dry.

C)   Remove the jute from the scrap paper when dry.

STEP 3:

A)    Place a mug on the felt. Use a pen to trace a circle around the mug.

B)    Cut out the circle of felt.

C)   Fold the felt circle in half, and then in half again.

D)   Use a pen to make a dot in the center of the folds. Unfold to reveal the center mark.

STEP 4:

A)    Tie a knot in the first color of jute.

B)    Place a dab of hot glue in the center of the felt circle and lay the knot on the hot glue. Note: Be careful, the glue is very hot!

C)   Add more hot glue to the felt, around the center knot. Coil the jute around the knot, pressing it into the hot glue. Continue adding hot glue and coiling the jute around the central point.

D)   Make about 5 passes around the center, then cut the jute. Start the second color of jute where you left off with the first color. Hot glue the end in place to begin.

STEP 5:

A)    Coil the second color of jute around the central point, adding hot glue when needed.

B)    Make about 4 passes around the center with the second color, then cut the jute.

C)   Start the natural, undyed jute where you left off with the second color. Hot glue the end in place and begin coiling it around the central point, adding hot glue when needed.

D)   Make about 2 passes around the center, then cut the jute.

STEP 6:

A)    Use a quarter to trace a circle on a piece of parchment paper. Place a dab of hot glue in the center of the circle.

B)    Make a knot at the end of a piece of natural jute. Lay the knot on the hot glue.

C)   Add more hot glue on the parchment paper, around the center knot.

D)   Coil the jute around the knot, pressing it into the hot glue. Continue adding hot glue and coiling the jute around the central point until you reach the traced line of the circle. Pop the jute coil off the parchment paper once the hot glue cools. Note: Make about 13 smaller coils, or enough to cover the exposed edge of the felt on the coaster.

STEP 7:

A)    Add a dab of hot glue to the exposed felt edge of the coaster.

B)    Press a small jute coil into the hot glue.

C)   Continue gluing the small jute circles around the edge of the coaster.

D)   Completely cover the edge of the felt.
