Titles
Spelling and GrammarIt may sound terribly obvious, but triple checking your spelling and grammar before you glue anything onto your posterboard is time well spent! All your hard work can be washed away by a glaring spelling error in your poster title. Enlist another pair of eyes for help with this job if you can.
Shape and Design
This is the fun part! Make your poster more attractive and help reinforce your poster's theme with the shape and design of your title and image lettering.
Check out the following examples to see just how much a simple change in lettering style can alter the appearance of the same word. Use these examples as a springboard to launch your own creative poster lettering ideas.
Straightforward bold lettering in a solid color is always a safe bet and assures that your title is legible from far away. This fancy script lettering with a border of hearts implies romance. Useful for anything from a poster announcing the Valentine's Day Dance, to a sign celebrating an anniversary or a poster on Shakespeare's sonnets. Box the individual letters of your title or caption. Remember to keep your colors coordinated for a finished look. Simple white letters can be very bold especially when against a vibrant background. Use yard sale price stickers as a vibrant and uniform background to highlight your poster title letters! Accent you poster title by adding any small symbol which reinforces your poster's theme, such as animal tracks, peace signs, shapes, etc. Add a formal or elegant touch with script lettering. This can also be used to create an old-fashioned feeling. Notice how the angle of these letters gives the impression of movement or speed. Dashes and dots can be used to add a little zing to your title. Slightly jumbled letters in bold colors are perfect for a fun or playful poster title. Imagine this style on a sign recruiting members to join a club, or on a poster celebrating a birthday. Put someone's name in lights or announce an upcoming performance with marquis-style poster lettering! Enclose your title in a memorable shape to give instant spark to your poster! A border around your poster title can wordlessly emphasize your poster's theme. Speech balloons add fun and animation to any poster. Notice how the same letter, even in the same size and shape, takes on a different appearance when you change its surroundings or contents. A poster that already has many images or other "busy-ness" can benefit from simple bold lettering.
