Poster Backgrounds

Adding a background to your poster can make it more appealing and ease the worry of how you are going to fill that "big white space" otherwise known as your posterboard.

Whether you use patterns, illustrations, muted or bright colors, backgrounds can create a more unified and polished finished product, and instantly enhance the appearance of your poster.

TIP: Remember that backgrounds are to be just that-in the background. Your background should not compete with or overpower your titles, text, or main images.

CHECK OUT THESE INSPIRING IDEAS FOR POSTER BACKGROUNDS:

To imply various natural themes:
Make a simple background of layered color by using crayons, watercolors, or pastels to remind your audience of a meadow at sunrise, a beach at sunset, a clear and starry night sky, a forest vista, a lush farmer's field or an arid desert.

To emphasize a geographical theme:
Enlarge a map of your topic location either in color or black and white and cover your poster with it.

BACKGROUND IDEAS

The simplest background can be created by attaching construction paper to your poster in a colorful pattern.

Other easy backgrounds can be made by cutting construction paper into shapes relevant to your topic. The shapes will help identify the theme of your poster from a far distance and provide a colorful background.

Simple symbols can also be used as a background for your poster to create a visual tie to your theme. Think of any symbol or image which brings to mind the theme of your poster. The possibilities for this are endless.

To give an antique or historical feeling:
Create a simple background with a collage of old photographs or copies of photographs. These can be photographs related specifically to your poster topic or random photos that are from a certain period of history.

To convey a mechanical, robotic, or futuristic theme:
Cover your board with aluminum foil, either smoothly for a sleek effect or after it has been crumpled up and then reopened for a crinkly effect. This idea is an instant eye catcher for a poster that needs some pizzazz. Great for posters about recycling! You can also paint over foil for a unique effect.

TIP: Enlarge and copy a color map, photo, or other image related to your poster theme to create a subtle background.

For Example:

  • Nations: Official flag, map
  • Music: Staff with treble or bass clef
  • Agriculture: Cornfield, cows
  • Science: Microscope
  • Romance: Cupid, hearts
  • Poison: Skull & crossbones
  • Mystery: Magnifying glass
  • Industry: Smokestacks
  • Sports: Olympic Rings

SOURCES FOR BACKGROUND MATERIALS:

  • Newspapers/Comics
  • Wrapping paper
  • Brown kraft paper
  • Aluminum foil
  • Colored plastic wrap (use as a background or as a transparent "cover")
  • Enlarged photocopied images
  • Construction paper
